I have been sued.

If you have been served with a document that tells you you have been sued, you should take this seriously. Do not throw the document away. Ignoring the service of process will not make the claim disappear.

If the claim is for something for which you may have insurance, advise your insurance company immediately and provide them with a copy of the lawsuit. In most cases the insurance company will defend you and appoint a lawyer to act on your behalf.

If you are not insured for the loss being claimed in the lawsuit, you should consult with a lawyer as soon as possible. The time to respond before judgment can be obtained against you is as short as 20 days from the day you were served.
